Fireworks and Furry Friends: Keeping Pets Safe This 4th of July

The 4th of July is a time to celebrate with friends, family, food—and of course, fireworks. But while we’re enjoying the festivities here in Hillsdale, many pets are having a very different experience. At Northside Veterinary Hospital, we see firsthand how stressful this holiday can be for animals, especially dogs who are sensitive to loud noises and sudden flashes.

Each year, pets go missing or get hurt during Independence Day celebrations. The good news? A little preparation can go a long way in keeping your dog safe and calm.

Create a Quiet, Comfortable Space

Before the fireworks begin, set up a quiet room in your home where your dog can relax. Include their bed, favorite toys, and maybe a blanket or t-shirt that smells like you. White noise, calming music, or a TV can help drown out the noise from outside.

Skip the Fireworks with Your Dog

Even if your dog is usually laid-back, fireworks can be overwhelming. It’s best to leave them at home rather than bringing them to public events or backyard shows. A startled dog can quickly bolt and get lost.

Check Collars, Tags, and Microchip Info

Make sure your dog’s collar fits properly and that their ID tags are easy to read. If your pet is microchipped, confirm that your contact info is up to date—it’s the most reliable way to reunite if they run off.

Stay Calm and Be Reassuring

Dogs often look to us for cues. Try to stay calm and go about your evening as usual, even if your dog seems nervous. Reward relaxed behavior, and avoid punishing them for being scared.

Consider Calming Aids

If your dog has shown anxiety around fireworks before, talk to us ahead of time. We can recommend options like calming wraps, pheromone diffusers, or medications to make the evening a little easier on them.

Clean Up After the Show

The morning after the 4th, check your yard for firework debris before letting your dog out. Spent fireworks and other leftovers can be dangerous if chewed on or ingested.
