Toxaplasmosis

What is Toxoplasmosis?
We have all heard the advice that pregnant women should stay away from cats. The reason for this is that it is commonly believed that cats transmit a disease known as toxoplasmosis. This disease has minor effects on most people but can have deadly effects on the unborn and on people with depressed immune systems. Cat feces are one route of transmission. A more likely route of transmission, however, is through undercooked meats. Cats are usually exposed to toxoplasmosis by eating raw meat containing the parasite just like humans and often the disease goes undiagnosed. To minimize the risk of exposure to toxoplasmosis by high-risk individuals, follow these guidelines:
-Disinfect the litter pan and surrounding area
-Change the cat litter daily wearing household gloves
-Keep your cat indoor so that the cat does not have access to infected preys and don't feed the cat any raw meats.
-Stay away from outdoor cat defecation areas.
Following these few guidelines and maintaining healthy habits at home can easily prevent the spread of toxoplasmosis.
