What is Lyme Disease?
Until recently, pet owners have concentrated on controlling fleas and have pretty much ignored ticks. With the onset of Lyme disease, though, ticks have gained in prominence and in the need to control them.
In this part of the country, as well as in many other regions, the disease known as Borreliosis (more commonly known as Lyme disease -named after the community in Connecticut where in 1975 the disease was first diagnosed in humans) has given people increased reason to be concerned about ticks.
Important points to know about Lyme disease
-Lyme disease affects humans as well as pets and is generally spread through ticks.
-The disease can cause infected dogs to become lame in one or more legs due to joint swelling and pain. An infected dog will also become feverish.
-If you notice any of the above symptoms in your dog, have laboratory tests done as soon as possible to determine whether your pet has contracted Lyme disease. Visual examination by your veterinarian cannot determine whether your pet has contracted Lyme disease, as the tick is nearly impossible to see with the naked eye.
-Your pet can be successfully treated for Lyme disease with antibiotics if diagnosis is made early enough.
-To prevent Lyme disease, use a good insecticide product recommended by your veterinarian.
-There is now also a vaccination available to prevent Lyme disease in dogs.
You will need to talk to your veterinarian to determine if this vaccination is a good option for your pet. |
